Just a few years ago, logistics service providers were proud to guarantee next-day delivery to their customers. Today, however, many providers in distance selling are focusing on same-day delivery, establishing their own logistics networks, and developing innovative solutions for the last mile.

  • Driven by increasing size and market concentration, online corporations are entering the logistics market as powerful competitors and pace-setters.
  • Whether same-day delivery is ecologically or economically reasonable for customers is no longer a decisive factor. As providers in online retail can hardly differentiate through products or prices, delivery speed is now used as a unique selling point.
  • Logistics service providers must rise to the challenge:
    • with the most attractive services and/or
    • with the lowest costs and/or
    • with the highest quality.

  New challenges for logistics

Professional process, warehouse, and transport management is now standard for logistics and trade companies. However, to ensure smooth operations, globalized supply and shipping relationships must be managed. Three major challenges that service providers will face in the coming years are

  1. transparency and system integration of information flows,
  2. efficiency and automation of material flows, and
  3. safety and reliability across the entire supply chain.

In the logistics center of tomorrow, formerly large, centrally controlled systems will increasingly be replaced by compact, autonomous systems, such as the shelf-mounted robot Toru.
